Discovery Questions
Think about your favorite food. How is it made better by science? Does your food change if it is hot or cold? What changes might occur? Record your observations.
Scientists keep journals to record their observations (what they see). You can create your own scientific journal by folding several pieces of paper together. Use your journal to record how the moon changes each night. If you draw how you see the moon each night, does it change? What changes do you see?
Scientists observe the world around them and work to solve problems based on what they see. What is a problem you could solve using science? Share your ideas with an adult.
Let’s invent a machine. You will need recyclable materials (cereal boxes, clean food containers, old papers), tape, and scissors. Think of a problem in your house you could solve by inventing a new machine (for example, a machine that picks up toys). Sketch your machine. Use the recycled materials to make a prototype (sample) of your machine with your adult.
