Discovery Questions
After your child receives and reads this book, Discuss one or more of the following questions to help him/her make connections and build comprehension.
- Charlie very much wants to find one of the golden tickets. Write the story of when you wanted something just as much, and what happened after you got it, or didn't.
- On page 58 Willy Wonka is described as a squirrel because of his quick movements. What animals would you compare the other characters to? Make a chart of the characters and the animals you compare them to. Share your chart with a parent.
- Charlie's family is described as being hungry and poor. They never had enough to eat, and they were cold in the wintertime. At the end of the book Grandma Josephine says, "I'm starving! The whole family is starving!" Talk with a parent about what it means to be truly hungry all the time.
- The factory is filled with all sorts of rooms that make all sorts of candies. Invent 5 rooms, and then describe the kinds of candies that are made there. How could the children get into trouble in each of those rooms? Write it down, draw pictures, and share with your parents or other adult friends.
