Reyna's grandfather played in a mariachi band. But that was before she was born. Now the vihuela hangs on the wall of the restaurant where her mother cooks. Through the vihuela, Reyna learns about her grandfather, and the friendships he had.

Discovery Questions

  • Reyna loses her temper and throws a book, which hits her Grandfather’s vihuela. When have you lost your temper? What happened? Were you sorry? Write about it. Share your story with a parent.
  • Mama wishes she could hear Abuelito play again, and she does when she hears the record. Think of another story where someone wishes for something. Use a Venn diagram to show five ways the stories are alike. Then show five ways they are different.
  • Reyna’s Abuelito was loved by many people. They remembered her grandfather long after he had passed away. What kind of person do you think he was? Why do you think this? Talk about it with a parent.
  • With a parent find and listen to some mariachi music. Make up a dance to the music. Perform the dance for your family and friends!
