Discovery Questions
Have you helped a parent or grandparent plant a garden? What did you grow in it? Draw a picture of your garden. Include all the different plants. Don't forget to color the pictures.
Lola plans her garden. She picks the seeds and plants them. She waters the seedlings and pulls out the weeds. What other character in another story has to plan their work? How is that character like Lola? How are they different? Talk about it with a parent.
How do you think Lola felt when all her flowers bloomed? Her friends came to look at her garden. How do you think the garden made them feel? Why might planting a garden be important? Talk about it with a parent.
It is almost never too late in summer to plant something. There are vegetables that grow quickly (like radishes and lettuce), and some can be planted late in the season (in July and even August) for a second crop (like snow peas and bush beans). Flowers can be planted in pots and brought inside when the weather turns cold. Plan a little garden. With a parent's help, plant the seeds and take care of the plants. Keep track of how your garden grows!
