Discovery Questions
Humphrey has nicknames for almost all the children in the class. Like Slow-Down-Simon, Too-Helpful-Holly, or Stop-Talking-Sophie. What would your nickname be? Write about it. Share your story.
Humphrey wants to help. He helps Phoebe find her watch and helps Thomas and Joey become friends. Think of another character in another story you know who helps people. Make a chart. How are they like Humphrey? How are they different? Share your chart with others.
There are many responsibilities in this book. Each of the children has to learn something (besides their schoolwork). Mr. E. has to learn to be a better teacher. Even Mrs. Brisbane had to learn to pay attention to what she was doing. Why is it important to keep learning things? Talk about it with others.
Even though it is Aldo’s job to clean the classrooms, it is not his job to pick up and put away everything the children and teachers leave out. Pretend you are Mr. E. Write an apology letter to Aldo for the messy room.
