The Indian in the Cupboard book cover
Omri's big brother has no birthday present for him, so he's given Omri an old medicine cabinet he's found. What could be better than a magic cupboard that turns toys into living creatures?
By: Lynne Reid Banks

Discovery Questions

  • Mr. Yapp accuses Omri of stealing. When have you been FALSEly accused of stealing? How was your experience like Omri’s? Talk about it with a parent.
  • Omri wants to keep the cupboard and Little Bear a secret. Who in another story wants to keep a secret? How are their situations the same? How are they different? Use a Venn diagram to compare the two characters and situations.
  • Little Bear and Boone immediately dislike each other, even though they don’t know each other at all. This is called prejudice. Why is it wrong to judge people by what they wear, the color of their skin, or the holidays they celebrate? Talk about this with a parent.
  • At the end of the book all the figures are put into the cupboard, and returned to being plastic. What if Boone did not return to the wild west, but instead went somewhere in time where he could become an artist? Write that story. Don’t forget to draw and color the pictures.
