Discovery Questions

  • The boy took his mice out of their cages even though he wasn’t supposed to. When have you done something you shouldn’t have done? What happened? Write about it and share your story.
  • The boy had to be very brave to carry the mouse-maker into the kitchen to poison the witches. Think of another story where someone is brave. How was that character like the boy? How were they different? Share your ideas.
  • The witches thought children were disgusting. Why should their ideas be more valuable than anyone else’s? Why did they think they could get away with being mean to children? What about the opinions of the children and their parents?
  • At the end of the book, the boy and his grandmother go to the castle in Norway to confront the new high witch. Write that story. What happens? How does it happen? Draw and color the pictures and share your story.
