A Bad Case of Stripes book cover
Camilla Cream loves lima beans, but she never eats them. Why? Because the other kids in her school don't like them. And Camilla Cream is very, very worries about what other people think of her. In fact, she's so worries that she's about to break out in...a bad case of stripes!

Discovery Questions

  • Camilla is worried about fitting in. She doesn't eat lima beans because she wanted to impress people. When have you done something or not done something you wanted to do only to impress someone? Was it a good idea? Why or why not? Discuss this with a parent.
  • Camilla wanted to impress everyone around her, but that didn't make her happy at all. What other character in another story worried about someone else's thoughts, and made themselves unhappy as a result? How is that character like Camilla? How are they different? Use a Venn diagram to compare the two characters.
  • People don't really get stripes when they make themselves unhappy because they are worried about other people's opinions. Why then is it important to be honest about your likes and dislikes? Talk about it with a parent.
  • Write a poem or a song about Camilla's illness. Tell the whole story--stripes, the flag, pills, her bedroom, all of it. Remember to end with her eating lima beans. (Don't forget, only the end words need to rhyme!) Share your poem or song with a parent.
