Discovery Questions

  • Amber is dealing with several adjustments in this book—her father returning from Paris, where to spend Thanksgiving, her mother’s engagement to Max, and becoming part of a new family. Tell the story of a time when you have had a big change in your life and how you dealt with it.
  • Who is another character that had to cope with a parent’s divorce or a big decision like who to spend a holiday with? Tell three ways how that character is like and is not like Amber. Use the Venn diagram, or draw your own on the back.
  • How many friends or classmates do you have that also have parents who are divorced? List 5 questions about how they feel at holiday times. Interview them and write down their answers. Finally discuss the answers with your family.
  • What if Amber had chosen to go to Walla Walla instead of spending Thanksgiving with her father? Re-write the end, telling how her parents, Max, and Amber would have felt.
