Discovery Questions

  • This book has a lot of rhymes. With the help of a parent think of words that rhyme with “cat.” Think of words that rhyme with “tree.” Think of words that rhyme with “land.” See how big your lists can get!
  • There wasn’t enough room for all the letters at the top of the coconut tree. Think of another story where there wasn’t enough room. How are those characters like the letters? Talk about it with a parent.
  • The letter “a” starts all this mess. While the others find it exciting, many get hurt, and the capital letters have to come help and collect the small letters. At the end, “a” says, “Dare, double dare, you can’t catch me, I’ll beat you to the top of the coconut tree!” If you were the parent of “a”, what would you do? Talk about it with a parent.
  • What does the world look like from the top of the coconut tree? Draw a picture of that.
