It's a new school year, and Greg Heffley finds himself thrust into middle school, where undersized weaklings share the hallways with kids who are taller, meaner, and already shaving. The hazards of growing up before you're ready are uniquely revealed through words and drawings as Greg records them in his diary.

Discovery Questions
In the beginning of the book Greg and Rowley are being bullied by Nasty Pants. When Greg tells his father, Dad and Rowley’s dad paid a visit to the parents of Nasty Pants. After learning Nasty Pants was in kindergarten, Greg’s dad was angry. Greg didn’t like being chased with a stick. When have you been bullied by someone you shouldn’t have been afraid of? What happened? Write about it in a story.
Greg learns an important lesson at the end of this book when he realizes he should not have run but just explained what happened. Can you think of another character in another book where they got into trouble by running instead of just explaining what happened? Compare those characters using the Venn diagram.
Both Greg and Manny act in very selfish ways in this book. Write a list of at least 5 times each of them is either selfish or mean to someone, who they are mean to, and why what they did was mean. Discuss this with a parent or adult friend.
Pretend you are in middle school and Greg and Rowley are in your class. Write your own diary, complete with illustrations for the month between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
