Come along with Tom as he spends the night locked in Swift Enterprises for a school trip. What will he do when there is an unexpected lock down? Can he use his inventions to escape to other parts of the building? And how will he avoid being recorded by Rowan, the son of a reporter who wants to write a story about Tom and his school?

Discovery Questions
Tom Swift creates inventions to solve problems around him. What inventions in your home or school make life easier? How would your life be different without these inventions?
When the lockdown happened, Rowan felt worried and scared. Tom helped him feel better. What other stories have you read where one character helped to reassure another? How would this story change if Rowan and Tom were not in lockdown together?
People have always invented ways to speed up work, communicate more effectively, or make life tasks easier. Think of three inventions you use every day (an example might be the lightbulb). At your library or with an adult on the computer or phone, look up when those inventions were created. Which is the oldest and which is the most recent? What do you think life was like before those inventions?
Think of an invention you could design that would your life easier? (Maybe a machine that picks up all the toys in your house and puts them on a shelf!). Divide your paper into 4 parts, and create 4 different designs drawings of your invention. Which design do you think will work the best? Why?
