Discovery Questions
Think of a story you have read where the main character struggled to learn something new. What happened to the character in that story? Did they ask for help? Did they have to practice harder than those around them? How were the struggles the character faced the same or different than Jerzey Mae’s struggles?
Have you ever wanted to be good at something, but no matter how hard you try, it feels like you aren’t making progress? Sometimes, when we try something new, setting small goals can help us feel successful and stay motivated to keep trying. What are some small goals you can set to reach your big goal? What will you do to celebrate reaching each small goal? Think about something you want to accomplish (like making the basketball team). Make a plan with several small goals over time (Example: “I will practice 30 minutes after school every day this week.” or “I will practice shooting the ball in the net until I make it three times in a row.”). Share your plan with your adult.
With permission, research someone famous you admire (like an actor, musician, dancer, artist, athlete, leader, etc.). Were they always talented? Did they have to get extra lessons to become better? Did they work hard to make their dreams come TRUE? What did you learn from reading about this person? Talk about it with your adult.
Who is someone you admire for being good at something? It can be someone famous or a friend or family member. Make a list of what makes them unique and good at their specialty. Now, make a list about yourself and what makes you unique or good at your specialty!
