The Boxcar Children book cover
When Henry, Jesse, Violet, and Benny's parents die, the children are afraid of being separated. Or worse, having to live with their grandfather! They decide to stick together and find a new home for themselves. All goes pretty well, until one gets sick. What will happen?
By: L. Kate Deal

Discovery Questions

  • The children believe their grandfather is mean. He turned out not to be mean at all. When have you thought something about someone that turned out not to be TRUE? Write about it and share.
  • Dr. Moore watches over the children. Think of another story where someone watches out for someone else. Use a Venn diagram. How are they like Dr. Moore? How are they different? Share your diagram.
  • The children thought they could do a better job of raising themselves alone than with their grandfather. While they lived in a different time than now, why did they think they might be able to do this? Was it a wise thing to try? Talk about it with someone at home.
  • The children lived without a radio, TV, the internet, a phone, or even water and electricity. Could you take a week-long break from watching shows? Share what you would do with your time if you did take a break from electronics. Could you take a family-wide break from electronics? Share your ideas with your family.
