The new kid in school needs a new name! Or does she? Being the new kid in school is hard enough, but what about when nobody can pronounce your name?
By: Yangsook Choi

Discovery Questions

  • When Unhei moves to the United States from Korea, she feels she needs a new name. When have you felt that you needed to change something about yourself so you would fit in with your friends better? How was your experience like Unhei's? How was it different? Talk about it with a parent.
  • The children in Unhei's class were confused. They didn't know why she didn't have a name. What other character in another story was embarrassed about something that they didn't want to share? How are they like Unhei? How are they different? Compare them using a Venn diagram.
  • The children in Unhei's class are very kind when she tells them she wants to pick a new name and when she tells them her real name. They don't make fun of her. Why was this so very important? Talk about it with a parent.
  • Joey gave Unhei a very sweet gift--his nickname, Chinku, which means friend in Korean. Think of something you could do to make someone feel welcome and loved, then write a story about it! Don't forget to draw and color the pictures!
