The Peacock book cover
It was 1947, and Hitler was defeated in Germany. In Toronto, Barbara’s father prepares to leave for Germany to help the displaced people, and a peacock has moved into the family’s garden. Will the peacock drive her mother mad? Will her father be able to come home? It is up to Barbara to find a solution.

Discovery Questions

  • The three children had problems sitting still in the back seat when taking the boys to camp. When have you had trouble on a long car trip? What did you do to pass the time? Write about it. Share your story.
  • Barbara did not want to take care of the peacock, but she knew it was up to her. There wasn’t anyone else to do it. Who in another story takes on a responsibility, even though they don’t want it? Make a list of how they are the same as Barbara and how they are different. Share your list.
  • In school, Tommy believes that people should take care of themselves. Barbara knows they can’t always do so. In the story, they have no home. No food. No jobs. They need help. Why does she feel so strongly? Why does Tommy feel just as strongly? Talk about it with a friend.
  • At the end of the story, Barbara gives Shifra some Matzoh. Pretend you are Shifra. Write a thank-you letter to Barbara thanking her for her friendship and tell her about your trip to Canada. Be sure to draw pictures! Share your letter.
