Discovery Questions
What do you see when you look up at the sky at night? What does the moon look like tonight? Does it stay in the same place all night? Why do you think it moves across the sky? Talk to your adult about what you see.
Have you read another story about the sky? Did it talk about the sun or the moon? How are the sun and moon the same? How are the sun and moon different? Make a list of similarities (how they are the same) and differences (how they are different) with your adult. What did you discover from your lists?
The stars in the night can look different depending on where you live. In the United States, we see a group of stars called the Big Dipper. A group of stars is called a constellation. With an adult, see if you can discover where in the world people see the Big Dipper and where people cannot see this group of stars. What do they see in the sky instead?
With your adult, use a dark piece of paper (you can even use the inside of a cereal box!) and a piece of chalk or white crayon. Draw the stars you see in the sky. What happens if you use a small pin or needle and make tiny holes in your paper for the stars, then hold the paper up to a light? Does it look like the night sky?
