Discovery Questions
Dr. Seuss had some troubles in childhood. He was bullied because his parents were from Germany. When was there a time when you were bullied because of something you could not help? Write about your experience. Share your story with a parent.
Dr. Seuss started writing children’s books because that was one of the few options he had without breaking his contract with Flit. Think of another person, either real or in a story, who ended up doing something successful by accident. How is that person like Dr. Seuss? How are they different? Compare them using a Venn diagram.
Dr. Seuss was extremely lucky. Each of his wives were very supportive of his work. He had publishers who would publish anything he gave them. What if someone had not been supportive? Why is it important to be supportive of other’s creative work? Talk about it with a parent.
One thing Dr. Seuss liked to do was make up creatures and give them silly names. Invent your own creature. Give it a silly name. Then write a story about it. See if you can write your story in rhyme like Dr. Seuss! Don’t forget to draw and color the pictures. Share your story with a parent.
