Word Girl: The Big Bad Butcher book cover
It was a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. Everything went wrong, right down to lima beans for supper and kissing on TV. What do you do on a day like that?
By: Judith Viorst

Discovery Questions

  • Have you had a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day? Write the story of how your bad day went and compare it to Alexander’s.
  • Alexander is a lot like many other characters in other books. Using the Venn diagram, or draw your own on the back, list five ways Alexander is the same and five ways he is different from another character.
  • Alexander’s bad day would have been worse if he also had a big test, presentation, or some other big even that also went badly. Pretend Alexander is in your class. What could you and your friends do to help him get through the day? Write it in a story.
  • Alexander spent the whole book listing all the things that went wrong. Some of those bad things he caused (going to sleep with gum in your mouth, for example). Re-write the story as if it was a great day for Alexander.

Discovery Questions are available in English and Spanish in the app.
